Advocating for the Twice Exceptional (2e) and/or Gifted Child

Advocating for twice exceptional and/or gifted children can be a challenging process. Although it is often said that giftedness is a also a ‘special need’, gifted children are not protected under federal law in the same way that students with disabilities are. Additionally, many twice exceptional students are denied IEPs and appropriate supports, because their giftedness often masks their very real disabilities and every day struggles. This workshop helps families to understand:

•current definitions of gifted and 2e students

•review of state and federal guidelines for gifted programs

•how to advocate for gifted and 2e children so that both giftedness and disabilities are addressed and supported in the classroom environment.
