Community Organizer

SpEducational
Los Angeles, CA • Contract Position
$35-50/hour commensurate with experience

About SpEducational

SpEducational is a non-profit organization that empowers and mobilizes families of students with disabilities to effect positive systems change in special education. We deliver free workshops year-round in English and Spanish on TK-12 educational policy and rights to underserved families, transforming them into advocates and community leaders. We work directly with families and are building an ever-expanding network committed to positive change.

Current Focus: SpEducational is the 2025 recipient of the prestigious EALA New Champions Grant Fund, supporting our IEP Empowerment Fellowship. The Fellowship will focus on transforming parents of students with disabilities in Los Angeles County to IEP experts and advocacy leaders.

The Role

We're seeking a dynamic Community Organizer to support our EALA-funded IEP Empowerment Fellowship. This role will help launch our Fellowship by supporting community organizing efforts, workshops, and family-focused advocacy initiatives.

Reporting: This position reports to the Founder/CEO.

Key Responsibilities

IEP Empowerment Fellowship (Primary Focus - 70%):

  • Support recruitment and outreach for fellowship participants across Los Angeles County

  • Assist in planning and coordinating IEP empowerment workshop delivery

  • Help develop, distribute and track family-focused surveys, data reports, and advocacy toolkits

  • Conduct one-to-one meetings with parents and community members

  • Support community organizing efforts to build parent leadership networks

  • Assist with program documentation, data collection, and impact measurement

Community Organizing & Outreach (30%):

  • Build relationships with community-based organizations, schools, and advocacy groups

  • Coordinate public forums and meetings led by family leaders

  • Support social media outreach and digital organizing campaigns

  • Assist with workshop development and special education policy research as needed

Qualifications

Required:

  • 1-2 years experience in community organizing, advocacy, or education

  • Passion for special education rights and family empowerment

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills

  • Highly organized, detail oriented and able to multi-task

  • Experience working with diverse, underserved communities

  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation

Ideal Candidate:

  • Has lived experience advocating for a student with a disability in public schools

  • Bilingual and biliterate (Spanish/English)

  • Has basic knowledge of IDEA and the IEP Process

  • Proficient with Google Docs, Zoom, PowerPoint, Canva, Facebook, Instagram

  • Comfortable with multi-tasking and working in a fast paced environment

  • Knowledge of Los Angeles County education landscape

Compensation & Work Arrangement

  • Contract basis: 10-20 hours per week, flexible scheduling

  • Rate: $35-50/hour commensurate with experience

  • Duration: Initial 6-month contract with potential for extension

  • Travel: Some travel may be occasionally required throughout Los Angeles County for community outreach

Work Environment

This role involves regular community engagement, including occasional evening and weekend events. You would be working with a small team, and be comfortable wearing more than one hat. You'll be working virtually with families throughout LA County, however, occasional in person attendance of community meetings may be needed. Physical requirements include ability to travel to multiple locations and facilitate in-person gatherings.
